Spring and summer

Der Rosenkavalier
Tokyo Opera
A fine performance by the principals; but mincing overacting by the Japanese cast members. An interesting set which probably hid some of the stage and action to those seated to the sides of the hall.

Olivier Latry
Madison Overture Center
The organist of Notre Dame played to a remarkably full house in Madison. Giving charming spoken explanations of each piece, he rocked the house with primarily French music. The 20th century items were particularly memorable.

Festival of Ancient Music
Madison
Not usually my cup of tea, this consort of old instruments - sackbutts, viols held against the chest, one odd instrument not even identifiable - and choir presented music which seemed unbelievable contemporary for having been written in the 16th century. An unforgettable evening.

Assassins
Madison Musical Theater
A hearty production to a minuscule audience of a piece with noteworthy music but a theatrically impossible libretto.

Cabaret
Middleton Musical Theater
A fine performance, often moving, of a musical I'd never seen performed on stage. The stage version is much more edgy and interesting than the film, which I have always enjoyed. A good experience.
