Die Frau ohne Schatten

May 26 2010
New National Theater - now called Opera Palace
conducted by Erich Wachter

Pretty good production of such a strange story. As always, excellent playing - this time by the Tokyo Symphony. Decent singing, but nothing to knock one's socks off. The nurse, Jane Henschel, was quite good but costumed and made up in a very unflattering manner. The Japanese cast members, as always, shamelessly overacted.

A couple favorite moments - the night watchmen's chorus, the finale - were well performed. Glad to have gone since it is not performed very often. Some stupid man coughed throughout behind me.
